FATIO FOOD POISONING | Zamora reports outbreak with 10 food poisoning victims
Last year Zamora registered a single food poisoning outbreak as a result of which ten people were injured. The information was published by the Ministry of Health of the Government of Castile and Leon, as well as the rest of the provinces of the community.
These statistics collected by Efe show that Zamora was second province with fewest epidemic outbreaks of this type after Soria, where no cases of poisoning were recorded. Two out of three cases of food poisoning occurred outside the family environment. most often in bars and restaurants compared to those in nursing homes or summer camps. Despite this, the highest percentage of people hospitalized corresponded to outbreaks of home consumption, accounting for one in every three poisonings recorded by the Ministry of Health.
As for the dates, they are summer monthsJune, July, August and September, during which almost half of the poisonings are recorded.
The most commonly detected microbial trigger was salmonella and, in particular, in 18 out of 39 cases its origin was identified.
Infection with this bacterium, which has an incubation period of 10 to 48 hours with an optimal reproduction temperature of 37 degrees, is manifested by episodes of acute gastroenteritis (vomiting and diarrhea), fever, convulsions, dizziness and abdominal pain.
Eggs and all products made from them, such as homemade mayonnaise, salads or omelettes, are the foods with the highest risk of contamination or spoilage. To avoid this, it is recommended to take extreme precautions when handling food, separating raw food from cooked food, and not compromising the cold chain in frozen food.
