FEES FOR SELF-EMPLOYED | Social Security confirms this: this is the date when self-employed people settle their contributions.

Year 2025 comes with modifications for more than 3 million self-employed workers in Spain. As of January 1, the Special Relief for Self-Employed Workers (RETA) contribution system has been in effect. will suffer deep transformation: Commission will be calculated based on real incomegiving up Contribution base selection model is still valid.

This is a change promoted by the government to achieve greater fairness in social security contributions, This represents a radical change for the self-employed, who will have their monthly payment adjusted based on how much they claim to earn from next year.

Goodbye freedom of choice, hello uncertainty

Until now, self-employed workers could choose their contribution base within certain limits, regardless of their actual income. This system allowed some self-employed workers to pay lower wages. although this will also mean less social protection in the future. With the new rules, this freedom disappears and creates a system that, according to the government, strives for greater fairness and progressiveness of contributions.

How will the new system work?

Social Security has set 15 monthly net income limits ranging from €670 to €6,000. Each section will be assigned a specific quota, which in 2025 will range from 200 to 590 euros. To determine the appropriate section, self-employed individuals must notify Social Security. through 2023, their 2025 revenue forecast. Workers will be able to change their contribution base up to six times over the course of a year, adapting it to changes in their actual income.

Who wins and who loses?

It is estimated that Self-employed workers with lower incomes may have their monthly payments reduced up to 30 euros. However, for those whose income exceeds €1,700 per month, their social security contributions will increase and they will pay €30–€90 more per month, which could mean an annual increase of €360–€1,080.

Concerns among the self-employed

This change to the contribution system has raised concerns among self-employed workers, particularly those on middle and high incomes, who will see their tax burden increase.. Uncertainty is now added to economic uncertainty and pressure from rising costs of living. about the real impact this new fee will have on your personal economy.

The future of self-employment is at risk

The new RETA fee system means significant change for self-employment in Spain. The government’s goal is for the system to be fairer and more supportive. But its success will depend on its ability to adapt to the reality of the self-employed group and not become an obstacle to entrepreneurship and the development of self-employment.
