NetherRealm Studios is full of surprises this week. After releasing the official announcement for Nitara in Mortal Kombat 1 – who is being voiced and portrayed by famed actress Megan Fox – just today we learned that lead, Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon has revealed one of the Hot Ones Did the episode.
What’s even more surprising is that this episode of Hot Ones also featured our first gameplay glimpse at the exclusive Jean-Claude Van Damme skin for Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat 1. Boone also provided some details about this skin during his Hot Ones interview.
As we know, there will be a special alternate skin for Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat 1 that will transform him into the legendary martial artist and action movie star Jean-Claude Van Damme. This skin will be included in the game’s first Kombat Pass – a DLC bundle pack that includes six additional playable characters and five new cameo fighters.
The official description of this Johnny Cage skin is as follows: “The Kombat Pack will feature a Johnny Cage character skin with the likeness of renowned actor and martial artist, Jean-Claude Van Damme (available at launch).”
In the episode Hot Ones, Ed Boon talked more about how Van Damme’s skin came into being. Those who know the history of Mortal Kombat know that the developers wanted Van Damme in their fighting game from the beginning, so this skin is an important milestone for the crew.
“When we created the first game, our original intention was to make ‘Van Damme the arcade game,'” Boon began. “So we called their people and we said, ‘We want to make a game based on Van Damme,’ and I don’t know if they said no or they never got it.
“Again, this is some 20-year-old kid who wants to make a video game. I can see how Van Damme would say, ‘No. We’re not doing that,'” Boon concluded.
Boon explains that the team behind Mortal Kombat tried several times over the years to get Van Damme into the game, but this time they “hit the lottery” with Mortal Kombat 1 and they got him.
Boone said, “We actually have his voice, and he’s going to be the Johnny Cage character.” “This is just a full circle moment that we had.”
At about 5:51 seconds into the Hot Ones episode, we see a few quick moments of gameplay featuring the Johnny Cage Van Damme skin. A quick fight with Johnny and Sonya is introduced as Van Damme greets his opponents with the middle finger.
While it’s not much, this glimpse gives us a good look at what this particular skin will actually look like in the game. Not surprisingly, from what we can see it looks pretty good.
