First human trials begin for vaccine that could cure lung cancer

the world’s first vaccine mRNA against lung cancer has begun to be tested in patients in seven countries. Experts have stressed that this “innovative” breakthrough This could save thousands of lives and mark a new era in the treatment of the disease.

The vaccine, known as BNT116was developed BioNTekand is aimed at combating the most common type lung cancernon-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). That is, vaccines teach the body to hunt and kill cancer cells and then prevent them from coming back.

The first phase of clinical trials started in 34 research centers in seven countries:

  • United Kingdom.
  • USA.
  • Germany.
  • Hungary.
  • Poland.
  • Spain.
  • Turkish.

In this first-in-human study of BNT116, some 130 patients that are between the early stages before surgery or radiation therapy and late stage disease or recurrence of cancer.

Experts hope to boost the human immune response to Cancer Bye leave healthy cells intactunlike chemotherapy.

Vaccine

Scientists from Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna They used their experience making mRNA cancer vaccines to create coronavirus vaccines. And that’s what more than ten yearsResearchers are looking to use these vaccines to treat cancer. Experts have been evaluating the use of these vaccines to treat the disease for nearly a decade. small clinical trialsin which they received some promising preliminary results.

Patrick OttDr. and medical school graduate and director of the Center for Personalized Cancer Vaccines at the Dana-Faber Cancer Institute, assured that there is currently a lot of “enthusiasm for mRNA,” emphasizing that “the funds and resources that are being allocated to mRNA vaccine research will be useful in the field of cancer vaccines“.

The vaccine is easy to administer and is reported to be Siou Min Leeleading the process in the UK, “you can select specific antigens on the cancer cell and then target them.”

How does this work?

The vaccine fights cancer thanks to the role of mRNA. When this molecule enters our body teaches cells to produce proteins which stimulate an immune response against these proteins when they appear in intact viruses or in tumor cells.

Cells that can take up the vaccine’s mRNA are known as dendritic cellresponsible for protecting the immune system.

Doctor Karin Brekpotfrom Vrije Universiteit Brussel in Belgium, who studies mRNA vaccines, explained that “dendritic cells teachers who teach t cells to find and destroy cancer cells or cells infected with a virus.

The immune system then identifies the protein produced by the dendritic cell and mobilizes certain immune cells to produce antibodies and other immune cells to fight infection.

When the immune system is compromised protein without virusyou will be ready to provide decisive response whether the real virus subsequently causes infection.
