First trailer and gameplay for Dune Awakening, an MMO about survival on Arrakis

Dune Awaking, an Arrakis survival MMO, debuts its gameplay and collaboration with Denis Villeneuve’s film, and it’s just as ambitious.

Dune: Part Two It was released last weekend and has achieved huge commercial success: it is the first box office hit of the year, accompanied by excellent reviews. Frabk Herbert’s work will receive a definitive film adaptation… and a video game?

There have been Dune games, some recent ones, for example Dune Spice Warsstrategy game, but by far the most ambitious Dune game ever made is Dune: Awakening, an MMO.

First revealed at Gamescom 2022, Dune Awakening will be released on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. After some images, concept art, and details about the basics, today we got our first look at the gameplay.

Dune Awakens: From Book to Film to Video Game

Dune Awakens It’s a dream come true for fans of Frank Herbert’s novels or those who walk out of the theater to watch Dune.

This is an open world survival game where a new character is created who can join a secondary house in an alliance with one of Great Houseslike the Harkonnens and Atreides.

WITH third party actionwith all kinds of weapons and vehicles, against other guilds, but also against the creatures of Arrakis (unless you run out of water or get swallowed up by a sandstorm)… Everything that characterizes the desert planet of Arrakis has been recreated in the game.

Today, developer Funcom released a second video featuring creative director Joel Bylos and the Dune cinematographer. Greig Fraser.

Although Dune Awakening is not a direct adaptation or spin-off of the films and has no affiliation with Warner Bros. (an independent game developed and published by Funcom), they collaborated with Fraser and the films’ creative team. V Legendary pictures.

So while this is their own interpretation of the world of Dune, there is stylistic consistency between the game and the movie so that players feel like they are part of the same world.

In the 30-minute Dune Awakening Direct presentation (you can watch it on YouTube here), they explained a lot more about the game, such as the use of Unreal Engine 5 and the advantages of Lumen and Nanite, the capabilities of the Epic engine. to create graphics and much more realistic lighting effects.

They also talk about the famous sandworms, which cannot be killed, only escaped or distracted with hammers; there is a base building; friendly fire in PvP; and that the MMO aspects will show up in post-game.

Sounds great? Dune Awakens Coming soon to PC, PS5 and Xbox Series. There’s no estimated release date, but there will be a closed beta coming soon, and while it probably won’t come out in 2024, they’ll give more information.
