Former superbike racer Anthony Gobert dies
The motorcycle world is once again shrouded in mourning. Anthony Gobert died this Wednesday, January 17, at the age of just 48 years. The mother was responsible for confirming the sad news via her Facebook profile with this emotional message: “My heart breaks as I write this as my firstborn, beautiful son. Anthony passed away this afternoon. I loved him from the moment he was born until the day I died. It was difficult at times to say the least, but he always had a good heart and cared about everyone. Unfortunately, he fell victim to an addiction that runs deep in our families. He tried many times to improve, but failed. “I am very proud of him and thank all the good people who contributed to his life.”
Gobert was a World Superbike rider, one of the outstanding specialists of the mid-90s. He won up to eight races in stock motorcycle competition (six with Kawasaki, one with Ducati and one with Bimota). In terms of the overall Superbike standings, his greatest achievement was fourth place in the 1995 World Championship, won by Carl Fogarty. He also competed in the 500cc World Championship in 1997, 1999 and 2000. His first year was with Suzuki, with whom he managed to score points and finish seventh in Austria, his best result in the top category. However, a life of alcohol and drug abuse doomed him to a worse fate: premature death. In fact, his positive anti-doping test led to his exclusion from the Japanese team. In 2004, he tested positive again after losing his girlfriend Susie Dixon in a road accident a few months earlier. Among other things, he was caught with an expired driver’s license, was convicted of robbery, and in 2019 was involved in a bar fight that landed him in the hospital after being hit with baseball bats.
The truth is that, although it sounds cruel, the news was expected for several days. And his brother, also driver Alex Gobert, was responsible for warning the entire motorcycle world. Just four days ago, the former pilot was admitted to hospital for palliative care. the victim of a short illness from which he was unable to recover. It even turned out that Anthony lived on the street. “It is with great sadness that we report that Anthony is currently hospitalized for palliative care. He is in the final stage of his life“,” his younger brother tweeted, announcing the sad outcome facing the family. The statement came after several videos of the former Australian pilot in hospital in very poor condition went viral. Rest in peace.
