Frontier Airlines will arrive at Mercedita airport in Ponce and fly to Cancun from San Juan
Frontier Airlines will become the third commercial airline with operations at Mercedita International Airport, in Ponce, by announcing a new flight to Orlando from Ciudad Señorial, which will begin in May.
In addition, the airline will operate more routes from the Luis Muñoz Marín international airport in San Juan, including one to Cancun, Mexico, which will begin in May. From San Juan, it will also operate flights to Dallas, Detroit, Baltimore and Cleveland. The latter has not been served in the capital since 2017.
Frontier Airlines also reported that it will grow at the Rafael Hernández airport, in Aguadilla, with a new direct flight to the city of Tampa.
With these new flights, the company will operate a total of 19 routes in Puerto Rico, which is its largest growth in the local market since it began operations in 2017. Until the summer of 2022, Frontier operated 11 routes to destinations in the Caribbean and United States from San Juan and a route from Aguadilla.
“We have not finished (growing) in Puerto Rico, this is just the beginning. The growth that we have had on this island has not been seen anywhere.” claimed Alfredo González, Frontier’s International Sales Manager, during a press conference.
Frontier’s expansion in Puerto Rico will take place on the sidelines of the failed merger with Spirit Airlines, with which González had told this outlet that he hoped to boost the company’s footprint on the island.
He added that the flights, including the one in Cancun, will operate for a year, or possibly longer, and not just for a season, as is the case in some cases.
For Carlos Mercado Santiago, director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company (CTPR), Frontier’s announcement is a “historic” fact.
He explained that the new flights represent 204,000 additional seats to the country’s air supply, which will result in an economic impact of $113.5 million during the first year of operation..
“We thank our Frontier partners for once again demonstrating their commitment to our destination. The addition of new non-stop routes between Puerto Rico and seven cities in the United States and Cancun, Mexico, significantly expands the options for the airline’s customers, when planning their business trips or vacations on the Island,” said Mercado Santiago. .

As part of the announcements, Frontier is offering flights starting at $49, while it will hold an event this Thursday, February 2, at La Placita in Santurce, where it will give away airline ticket coupons for up to $250, among other gifts.
