Google and Samsung welcome Apple and its iPhone

Gone are the days when we had to count the letters in SMS. In Spain, WhatsApp is the most popular messaging application when we want to talk to any of our contacts, but it would be wrong to simply forget traditional messages; especially since they are better now than ever.

Messaging between mobile phones has changed dramatically with the advent of RCS (Rich Communication Services), a new standard that provides access to advanced features that were until now exclusive to dedicated messaging applications. For example, with the help of RCS it is finally possible Share images and videos in high resolutiondirectly via traditional mobile message; This is what would have been called “magic” just a few years ago.

RCS messages also allow you to access one of WhatsApp’s most popular features: messages. improved group chatsin which you can add and remove users who participate in a certain topic or have a certain relationship, such as a special chat for family or work group. And when someone says something funny, we can respond to the message with emojis, as is possible on many social networks and messaging apps.

From the very beginning, Samsung and Google have been strong supporters of RCS and the ones who have worked hardest to spread it throughout the industry. Unfortunately, the proliferation of RCS among manufacturers has become a major obstacle to its popularization; in particular, due to the failure of Google’s main competitor. We are talking, of course, about Apple, which for many years has not only refused to accept RCSbut actively fought to prevent its adoption; as with its messaging app’s famous “blue and green messages”, which treated RCS users as “second-class citizens”.

The good news is that times are changing. The latest version of iOS finally adds RCS support.and iPhone users can now access almost the same features Android users had, such as reacting to emoji and sending media files. However, for now, one of the big improvements to RCS—secure encryption—is only available in messages between Android devices.

To use RCS, it must be activated for all chat participants; However, when a user connects without this technology, traditional messaging will be used to ensure compatibility. If we have an Android phone, we need to use Google Messages, an application that comes pre-installed by default on most Android phones and now on Samsung phones; If we have an iPhone, you need iOS 18 or later.

Samsung and Google today hailed a “new era of seamless messaging” as RCS is expected to become the default standard across the industry with the adoption of iOS. Something that perhaps should have happened years ago, but it is never too late if happiness is good, as they say in Spain.
