Habbo Hotel returns with its 2005 classic and servers open today – PC
The developer has cleaned up this old version of the game, taken directly from the original files.
Before Fortnite, Roblox, before we even knew the word metaverse, there was an online game that was consuming watches and watches of children’s adolescence and made parents nervous: Habbo Hotel. Growing up also meant leaving the walls of that building and the dozens of strangers who chatted there every day. Today, the Habbo Hotel returns exactly as you remember it.
“After discovering a decrepit old server with missing files earlier this year, after six months of work, Habbo developer and player McLeby has lovingly restored the old version of Habbo Hotel, first released in 2005.”
Its creators have announced Habbo Hotel Origins, a new/old version of the game that will be released for free and you can enjoy from today. Throughout the day they will provide a link that can be accessed from here and will require you to create a new account to log in. Habbo Hotel Origins will have the same features as the original at the time and will community-led initiative. In their post, they detail how players will be able to propose changes.
The surprise of the moment can make us forget about it. Habbo basically never left. Most of the original players had forgotten about it, but it remained playable for years, with content creators exploring current versions just a few months ago. Since its prominence in the 2000s, the game has undergone numerous changes, including removing the word “Hotel” from its title, to create a larger world similar to other new “metaverse” initiatives such as Roblox.
This case of collective amnesia is likely what made its creators they wanted the original back. A movement that in recent hours has revolutionized the networks with a plethora of comments (like this one and this one) from nostalgic players happy to be able to return to this special corner of their youth. Habbo Hotel Origins will co-exist with the current version of Habbo, but as two different entities, and in fact they have confirmed that both sites require different accounts.
Beyond its role as a rite of passage in the world of online gaming, Habbo Hotel’s demise was initially due to several factors. Its Flash technology did not allow it to adapt to new tools, and it was subject to constant security breaches. Interactions were not always positive, and there were instances of harassment between users. The site was also materialistic breeding ground for bad practices, with constant transactions between players for in-game items. Let’s hope they took all of this into account for their big comeback.
