Halloween Comet 2024: A celestial spectacle that will pass close to the Sun

Sunday, October 27, 2024, 8:06 p.m.

This Halloween, the Spanish skies will present a special gift: the arrival of Comet C/2024 S1 (ATLAS), which promises to be a celestial spectacle. This comet reached its closest approach to Earth on October 23, 2024, and a few days later, on October 28, it will reach perihelion, that is, its closest point to the Sun. Then this will be the best time to observe it. This proximity is critical because the comet is expected to be at its brightest during this time. If the comet survives the intense solar radiation and does not disintegrate, it will be visible in the northern hemisphere between October 29 and October 31, giving us an excellent opportunity to observe this phenomenon from privileged locations in Andalusia.

Favorable conditions are required to observe Comet C/2024 S1. From October 25 to 28, it will move between the constellations of the Raven and Virgo, most noticeable in the first half of the night. It is advisable to use a small telescope or binoculars and point them at the Sun before sunrise. For best visibility, it is ideal to position yourself in an area with low light and clear skies.

Best places to see a comet

– Roque de los Muchachos, La Palma, Canary Islands: thanks to the height and clear skies, this is one of the best vantage points.

– Granadilla de Abona, Tenerife, Canary Islands and also from La Palma to Roque de los Muchachos: ideal to enjoy the sky without light pollution.

– Sierra Morena, Andalusia: ideal place to observe the night sky.

– Montsec, Catalonia: Thanks to its low population density and minimal light pollution, it is ideal for astronomical observations. It can also be seen from Albaña (Girona), recognized as a Starlight Nature Reserve, and Muntanes de Prad (Tarragona).

– Sierra de Gredos, Castile and Leon: excellent conditions for observing the comet.

– Monfrague, Extremadura: an impressive natural environment for observation.

– Menorca, Balearic Islands: quiet place with clear skies.
