“Hemorrhoids more common in pregnant women” – Diario EP

The surgeon has over 12 years of experience treating all types of patients.

Hemorrhoids are a pathology that occurs in 35% of the population and are more common in pregnant women, and they cause a lot of pain. However, the embarrassment of this problem appearing in the rectal anus prevents many people from seeking timely treatment, leading to complications. In this regard, laparoscopist general surgeon Dr. Juan Carlos Vargas Ponce explains about hemorrhoids surgery.

What are Piles?

Hemorrhoids are caused by the separation of the venous packages found in the rectum and anus, where bulges form. Once this happens, it will give symptoms or complications like pain, lumpy sensation, discomfort, bleeding. The most complicated is thrombosis of the hemorrhoidal package, as it causes intense and intense pain; The second is prolapsed hemorrhoids which may require emergency surgery.

Why should it be complicated?

This occurs in patients with risk factors such as: pregnant women, chronic constipation, (if they consume less fruits, vegetables and fiber). Also when they do activities that require standing for long periods of time, putting in a lot of effort while defecating, frequent diarrhea. As hemorrhoids grow, they become more complex, as the types range from grades 1 to 4. It depends on the time it takes to develop, the longer the time, the greater the risk of complications.

How long does it take for a person with hemorrhoids to reach grade 4?

There is no fixed time, it depends on the hygiene and dietary habits of the patient. Constipation can become a permanent part of your life if you’re already aware of the problem and don’t get treatment. Hemorrhoids usually cause grade 2 or 3 bleeding. In grade 4 hemorrhoids have left the rectum and can no longer enter.

Is there any way to prevent the appearance of hemorrhoids?

This can be prevented if we avoid constipation and alternative positions. But if you already have the problem, there is oral medication that can be effective as long as the bleeding problem is not complex, without bleeding, prolapse, or thrombus. It keeps it there, but it doesn’t go away. When the patient has pain there, local treatment with creams and sitz baths with warm water for 15 minutes are recommended. It reduces symptoms but does not replace the final treatment: for grade 1 or 2, ligation is recommended and when it is grade 3 or 4, surgery is recommended.

What is involved in the surgery?

Before surgery, cleansing is done with an enema. For this intervention, regional anesthesia is given to remove the hemorrhoid package when the patient reaches grade 3 or 4. At all times the person is awake and lying face down. The operation lasts for about 30 minutes. The patient is discharged after 24 hours and given sitz baths, creams, and antibiotics for two weeks to allow the wounds to heal and prevent infection. The most complicated days are the first few days as swelling occurs. The person having the operation should then sleep on their side and sit on a donut-type pillow. Medical break can be for 15 days.
