What is TV calibration

By TV calibration we mean configure certain parameters to get the most out of the quality that television offers us. That is, we dwell on such details as adjusting the colors, contrast or brightness of the screen, so that when we start watching content, we take advantage of everything that the TV can give us. But the fact is that when buying a 4K TV, we do not always take full advantage of this quality, and for this we have to settle on some settings.

My TV is not factory calibrated?

The reality is that yes. When we buy a TV, it is already calibrated. What happens is that the settings that appear on our TV when we take it out of the factory are actually standard. It’s possible that your personal tastes differ or even, for example, the room you’re going to place it in requires different settings because it gives off more or less light than usual. Therefore, although in principle there is no need to calibrate a TV in order to see it well, if we want to enjoy it to the fullest, it is important that we do so.

Find a calibration standard

One of the first steps you should take to calibrate your TV is to find calibration standard. This is a visual representation of the colors and lines that combine to ensure that the various settings on your TV are adjusted correctly. This way, the color gamut will be displayed with the appropriate intensity, no more and no less. A very interesting option would be to reproduce patterns from YouTube, which can be done using this video. Once this color pattern appears on your screen, you can start making all the adjustments to ensure the result is perfect.

Get ready to start calibration

Once you’ve prepared the template, it’s time to start calibrating your TV. To do this, we recommend that you set all the settings exactly as you took them out of the box. If it’s a TV you’ve just installed, you won’t have to do anything else, but if it’s one you’ve already used, we recommend returning it to its original state. Additionally, we recommend that you position yourself during the calibration process. in the place where you usually watch TVbecause if you stand too close to the screen, the result may be different.

Adjust screen scale

Modern TVs have a system that adjusts the picture size to adapt it to your screen. But sometimes the scaling isn’t done quite right, and we end up missing some of what we want to see. To avoid this, you need to go to the “Sharpen and Overscan” template and adjust the zoom on your TV until it hits the mark. Overscan 0

and a white line appears around it. This will prevent the image from being cropped too much.

Adjust brightness and contrast

To adjust the brightness, you will have to reproduce the Black Clipping pattern. Adjust the brightness of the TV until you find a difference between bars 16 and 17 of the pattern that indicates sufficient brightness. To adjust the contrast, we will have to go to the White Clipping template. The moment when we see the difference between 234 and 245 bars. All in all, if we can see all the stripes, both white and black This will mean that the calibration was carried out correctly.

Get clearer images

Now that we have TVs with Full HD and even 4K quality, sharpness is more important than ever. To calibrate it you will have to go to the template Sharpness and overscanthe same one we previously used for scaling calibration.

In the TV menu, you will have to move the sharpness until all the bars appearing in the pattern are visible. with full sharpness and without the formation of strange optical effects

. This way, deformations will not appear when we watch movies or TV series.

More natural colors

Color adjustment is another point we need to take into account. To do this you will have to play according to the pattern Color clipping. Now you will have to change your TV’s color settings until you can completely correctly see the stripes displayed in the specified pattern. If in any of the colors you can no longer see the difference between the bands on both ends, this is a sign that you should change your saturation settings.

Color too dull or too rich This is one of the things that is most noticeable when playing content, so it is a very important aspect.

Did everything go smoothly?

To find out if your TV’s calibration is working properly, you just need to play some content and see if you notice anything strange. A very suitable option for testing is to use a series Simpsonsince coloring the said series is very helpful in identifying any small errors that we might have had.

In the event that you see that something does not suit you, all you have to do is make changes to the calibration again until the result is what you expected.
