As with every Minecraft update, the upcoming 1.21 update not only introduces new mobs and blocks, but also items. Some can be used to make recipes, while others have their own unique purposes. One of those special items is the Trial Key, which you can only obtain in Trial Chambers. We dedicated this entire guide to this small article and shared everything you need to know about it. So without further ado, let’s see how to get the trial key in Minecraft 1.21.
What is the trial key in Minecraft 1.21?
The trial key is an item added in the Minecraft 1.21 update. It looks like a copper key with a dark blue spooky skull like the mango. Since update 1.21 is in beta testing, the uses for this item are unknown at this time.
It may have something to do with copper doors, which currently behave the same as other non-iron doors. However, it may only have a purpose inside the Trial Chamber, since that’s the only place you can get it (more on this below). We’ll make sure to keep this guide up to date, so as soon as new information is released, you’ll know right away.

Where to find the trial key in Minecraft
You can get the test key inside the Test Chambers and only inside this structure, which spawns near the deep shale layer. If you want to know how to find Trial Courts, we already have a guide to help you locate them.
The test key is a relatively rare drops You can get it from multiple sources in this underground structure. Talking about the sources, you can get the trial key. from a chest near the entrance (6.8% probability), decorated pots in the corridor (3.6% probability), and as a result prize for completing the test generator challenge (50% chance). Since you are most likely to get this item from a test generator, let’s go over it right now.
What is test generator?
The trial spawner is a special type of spawner that summons a limited number of mobs proportional to the number of players joining the battle. If you are playing in a single player world, each trial spawner will spawn 6 mobs at a time. First, two mobs will appear and then once you kill one of them, a new mob will appear. If you manage to kill two mobs at once, the spawner will spawn two more.
Basically, you will fight two mobs from a test spawner, except when you have killed 5 of them and the one remaining is the sixth and last mob. After defeating all the spawned mobs, the test spawner will enter the cooldown state which lasts for 30 minutes. He won’t spawn any mobs during the cooldown, but after that, he’ll be ready to throw another challenge at you. Additionally, he will give you rewards such as precious items in addition to himself. One of these items may also be the test key you are looking for.

The game chooses mobs from which this spawner summons. four categories. Each Test Chamber has mobs from the melee, small melee, and ranged categories, as well as some Breeze mob test spawners. The surrounding blocks indicate which mob the spawner will spawn. So the mob test generator can generate and the blocks associated with them are as follows:
- Melee
- Zombie (moss covered cobblestones)
- Shell (chiseled sandstone)
- Silt (moss block)
- Small melee
- Silverfish (stone bricks)
- Baby Zombie (moss-covered cobblestones and cobblestones)
- Spider (stone and spider web on top)
- Cave spider (stone and spider web on top and podzol with a red fungus)
- from distance
- Stray (compacted ice)
- Skeleton (bone block)
- Skeleton with poison-tipped arrow (bone and podzol block with a red mushroom)
- Breeze (chiseled sauce)
Additionally, each Trial Chamber contains test spawners for only one mob per category. So if you found this structure and the first test spawner you see spawns skeletons, it means that the mobs within range of the entire structure are skeletons. Therefore, you won’t find other ranged mobs at all.
In short, one Test Chamber can spawn skeletons, zombies, and silverfish, while another can spawn strays, husks, and spiders. The rule does not count for Breeze generators, as every 100% Test Chamber has these generators scattered around.
As we already mentioned, the uses of the test key so far are not secure. But it seems like a very valuable and special item that you’ll probably want to have. Although that’s all we know for now. What do you think about the trial key? Let us know in the comments below!
