Huawei has solid-state batteries in its laboratories, which are safer and more durable than lithium batteries. Its inventor: a Spanish scientist
Increasing renewable capacity has led to the need to increase energy supplies, as well as the production of more and more electric vehicles. At the epicenter of this entire sector we find lithium, a scarce material causing problems. However, Huawei has patented a new way to use and improve lithium-ion batteries.
New patent. Huawei has registered a new patent related to solid-state battery technology. Titled “Doped sulfide materials and methods for their preparation, lithium-ion batteries.” This new project aims to improve energy efficiency, provide greater safety and a longer service life. The inventor of the patent is Spanish materials scientist Pedro Lopez-Aranguren.
Sulfur batteries? Research is focusing on the use of sulfur-doped materials in solid-state batteries. Doped sulfur has made it possible to increase ionic conductivity and improve the stability of lithium-ion batteries. This method can solve common problems associated with liquid or gel electrolytes.
Conventional lithium-ion batteries. The difference between proprietary and conventional lithium-ion batteries is that the latter, when using liquid or gel electrolytes, can cause leaks, have less thermal stability and, therefore, a greater safety risk. For all these reasons, Huawei’s new patent uses a solid electrolyte doped with sulfur, which improves safety by preventing leaks and explosions, increasing energy density and durability. In addition to better stability during long charge and discharge cycles.
Solid state batteries. Batteries of this type include: polymer, oxide and sulfur. The latter is the one we talked about in this article, while polymer uses flexible and lightweight materials, but they have lower ionic conductivity. In turn, oxide ones are stable, although they require more expensive production processes.
