The acclaimed American music worker, who has worked with the likes of Adele, Mick Jagger, Lana Del Rey, Justin Timberlake, Shakira, The Strokes, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Weezer, and more, had a lengthy interview with CBS to promote his new book. , The Creative Act: A Way Of Being.
At one point in the conversation, the host, Anderson Cooper, asked Rick Rubin if he played any instruments: “Barely.”
The music producer went on to admit that he doesn’t even know how to work a soundboard in the recording studio. “I have no technical ability,” he said. “And I don’t know anything about music.”

The host later told Rick Rubin that he “should know something” after working in numerous genres of music over decades.
“Well, I know what I like and what I don’t like.” She responded about it. “And I’m decisive about what I like and what I don’t like.”
Then Rick Rubin was pressured to reveal why he actually “gets paid.” To which he replied the following. “The confidence I have in my taste and my ability to express what I feel has proven to be useful for artists.”
Describing himself as a “reducer” rather than a producer, he explained, “I like the idea of getting the message across with as little information as possible.”
