Inflammatory markers in breast cancer prognosis

Study of more than 1,500 women with breast cancer

The analysis included up to 1538 women belonging to the European EPIC cohort from eight different countries and breast cancer survivors throughout the entire study period. For one, blood levels of a number of cytokines, molecules associated with inflammation, were quantified based on samples taken before cancer diagnosis.

After a median follow-up of 7 years, the risk of survival and mortality due to breast cancer or other causes was analyzed according to the levels of these molecules in the blood.

The results showed that elevated levels of certain cytokinessuch as interleukin 6 (IL-6), interleukin 10 (IL-10) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα), associated with lower survivalwith a greater impact on women who were postmenopausal at the time of diagnosis.

Higher mortality

EPIC cohort
