Is Mamma Mia 3 Really Happening?

16 years have passed since the first Mamma Mia The film graced our screens, bringing Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried and a host of other megastars together for an all-singing, all-dancing island extravaganza. Mamma Mia! Here we go again It was followed ten years later by an equally enjoyable and even sillier film that was both a sequel and a prequel to the original. And now it looks like we may be getting another dose of the ABBA-inspired franchise.

Meryl Streep hints at Mamma Mia return

There was talk about a third Mamma Mia movie for a while now. Back in October last year, producer Judy Cramer said that the third film would definitely “come out”, it was only a matter of time. She said Diversity: “I’m in a privileged position: I have Universal Studios who wants to do it, who I love working with, and I have a storyline.”

She added: “It’s just that with Mamma Mia it always takes a certain amount of time. Bjorn and Benny always require a certain degree of convincing. I don’t know how much more convincing they’ll be because everyone wants another movie.

“But they had ABBA Voyage, and then they wanted a break from ABBA music. But it will happen. We’ve finished the TV show and now maybe I’ll focus on the movie. Perhaps this will be the second celebration of the 25th anniversary.”

Then, at the Cannes Film Festival this week, Meryl Streep added fuel to the fire by announcing that she would “immediately” meet with Kramer to discuss the project. Talking to deadline About the project, she said: “I don’t know how they’re going to do it. They have an idea. I haven’t heard about it yet, but it’s there (in my journal) and I’ll hear about it pretty soon. Of course I want to do it. I think people like it.”

Will Meryl Streep play the lead role? Mama Mia 3?

The question is, can they—or will they—bring Donna (played by Streep) back? Mama Mia 2 Sees Donna dead and Sophie (Seyfried) trying to cope with the loss of her mother. However, Craymer believes there is a way to revive Donna’s character. “There’s a story here and I think Meryl should come back – and if the script is right, she will, I think, because she really enjoyed playing Donna,” she said in May 2023.

Apparently, Streep herself had some ideas too. “I told Judy that if she could find a way to reincarnate Donna, I was okay with it. Or it could be like one of those soap operas where Donna comes back and reveals that it was actually her twin sister who died.”

Strange things have happened in Mamma Mia peace—just think of the second film’s fever dream ending, in which Streep returns as Donna’s ghost and Cher takes a helicopter to a Greek island to sing. Fernandoand Lily James giving birth on a mountaintop.

Who else could play the lead role?

Nothing is confirmed yet, but Cramer thinks she could easily convince actors like Seyfried and Julie Walters to return for a third film. She said Daily Star: “The cast had a great time filming the first two films. Julie said she was going to retire from acting, but the only thing she would still do was something else. Mamma Mia movie”.
