It is located in Europe and promises a lot for the region.
IBM wants to lead the field of quantum computing and has several projects underway to achieve this goal. The legendary American company announced last year that it would have its first 100,000-qubit quantum computer ready by 2033 at the latest. At the same time, the first one was launched in 2023 quantum data center in Poughkeepsie, New York, and promised that the second such infrastructure would be located in Europe.
Time passed and IBM kept its promise. The opening of IBM’s first quantum data center outside the United States has just been announced. We’re talking about a cutting-edge facility located on its campus in Eningen, Germany, that promises to perform calculations beyond the modeling capabilities of conventional computers, opening the door to the development of drugs, materials and more.
IBM already has a quantum data center in Europe
As we pointed out in a previous article, this IBM data center was designed to integrate multiple quantum systems. This first phase is powered by two new IBM Quantum Eagle systems that have chips at their heart. 127 qubits. Now, the data center will take a significant leap when it later includes IBM’s Quantum Heron system, which promises to deliver up to 16 times the performance of previous chips.
IBM currently has only two active Heron systems, so the expansion of its new European data center will allow it to have three such systems in the short term. The good news is that once it is deployed, its power will be harnessed by companies, universities and research centers in different parts of the world, who will have access to promising quantum technology to fuel their projects.
The transnational corporation’s plans go much further. In recent years he has also worked on a 433-qubit chip called Osprey and others 1121 qubits whose name is Condor. It’s not unreasonable to believe that these chips will become part of advanced systems that will eventually be used in the company’s new machines. The quantum world still has room to grow, and these steps are very exciting.
