Italy will appeal to the Supreme Court against the departure of migrants from Albania

Rome (EFE).- The Italian government, headed by Giorgia Meloni, will appeal to the Supreme Court against the court’s decision to end the detention of the first 12 migrants destined for centers in Albania, ministerial sources confirmed to EFE.

Sources said the executive has already ordered the State Attorney’s Office to submit the appeal.

The measure comes amid a clash between the far-right Meloni government and a section of the judiciary over the expense of controversial migrant retention centers it has built on Albanian territory to manage potential repatriations.

Following an agreement with the Albanian Prime Minister, Edi Rama, the centers have been opened in the Albanian cities of Shengjin and Gjahër, on the other side of the Adriatic Sea, and they aim to ease migrant pressure on the Italian reception system.

Last Wednesday, the first 16 people of Egyptian and Bangladeshi nationalities arrived on a military ship, but 4 had to be immediately returned to Italy because they were minors or “vulnerable”.

However, two days later the Court of Rome did not validate the detention of the remaining twelve and ordered them to return to Italy, alleging that Egypt and Bangladesh cannot be considered completely safe countries, in line with recent decisions of the Court of Justice. On the basis of the Judgment of the European Union (CJEU).

The Rome court’s decision infuriated Meloni, who included the list of safe countries in a decree-law last night, in an effort to avoid other interpretations by judges (the list was previously integrated only in an administrative decree).

The government intends to direct migrants from safe countries, who have more difficulty obtaining international asylum, to Albania so that they can be returned more quickly.
