Health authorities Australia (Queensland Health) said they were notified within the last week 19 cases from dengue purchased locally in Mer Island is in Torres Strait.

The total number of cases identified in this outbreak is 39.

Five of these cases were identified as dengue serotype 3 (DENV3), and the serotypes of the remaining cases were not determined.

Mere Island, also known as Murray Island, is a volcanic island located in the Torres Strait in the north-eastern region of Australia. It is the easternmost island of the Torres Strait Islands group and part of the state of Queensland. The island is notable for its vibrant indigenous Meriam community, which has a rich culture and tradition.
