The primitive lottery is one of the most famous gambling games in our country. It consists of choosing 6 different numbers from 1 to 49 with the goal of guessing the winning combination in a draw on the day the ticket is registered.
A winning combination consists of 7 balls., of which 6 are drawn from the 49 number reel and 1 is drawn from the other 10 ball reel, this last ball corresponding to the “return”. An additional ball corresponding to the additional number is also drawn.
Primitiva members also have the opportunity to play with the same ticket and, if desired, another draw called “Joker”, which is based on the random selection of a 7-digit number unique to each participant. This drawing consists of drawing 7 numbers from a reel that has 10 numbers written at the beginning of the drawing.
There is a funny thing in the Joker draw, each time a ball is drawn, it falls back into the drum and can come out again on the next draw. The winner is the participant who has a combination formed by 7 assigned numbers in the corresponding order of appearance on the corresponding La Primitiva drawing ticket. The first step to participate in the lottery is to register an application. Participation means placing a bet based on 6 numbers out of 49 possible numbers, to which is added a return number, from 0 to 9. This number is randomly selected by the electronic terminal when the bet is confirmed.
The entry price is fixed, but has changed over time: as of January 2010, the price of the draw is 1 euro.
Primitiva allows the user to place more complex bets.s, for example, more than 6 numbers. These types of bets are limited to a series of bets that are considered independent for the draw.
When deciding on a bet, you can choose between two tickets: green, which allows you to enter one draw on Thursday or Saturday, and brown, which allows you to participate with the same bet in two draws of the week. The price of a brown ticket is double the price of a green ticket.
During the drawing, 6 numbers are drawn to make up the winning combination, and then an additional seventh number is drawn, known as the extra number. After this, the ball corresponding to the return is removed from another reel.
As for prizes, there is a prize ladder, the position of which depends on the number of hits relative to the main balls and an additional one that matches the 6 numbers of each participation, and/or the return one.
The prizes distributed are 55% of the drawing proceeds plus possible accumulated jackpots from previous drawings if any category is left open because it does not match any registered combination. The primitive lottery was created during the reign of Carlos III at the suggestion of the Marquis of Esquilache with the aim of increasing state revenues without the need to introduce new taxes.
The first drawing took place on December 10, 1763, using a system similar to the current one. For this occasion, 187,500 reais were collected, of which 75% was allocated for prizes and a quarter of the proceeds went to the state.
At that time, this lottery was called the “Numbers Lottery.” Beginning in 1812, when a form of lottery was born in which a number was printed on the tickets, it became known as the “Modern Lottery.”
The Primitiva lottery was played until 1862. More than a century passed before Sotero was held again. In 1985 it was restored by royal decree, and since then it has been celebrated week after week. Initially, this drawing was held only on Thursdays, but since 1990 it has also been held on Saturdays. As for the participation price, there has been an evolution over the years: from the original 25 pesetas to the current euro.
As for the dynamics of the draw, there have also been changes over the years. In June 1991, a return ball was introduced, and in 2012 it became possible to participate in the Joker drawing with the same ticket.
In November 2012, important changes took place in the award system. Prior to this date, the maximum prize and jackpot, if accumulated, was distributed among participants who matched 6 numbers drawn from a pot of 49 balls. From now on, the jackpot is distributed only to those who correctly guess all 6 numbers and make a refund at the same time. That is, to get the jackpot, you need to match all seven numbers.
