Sergio Conceicao will not remain Porto coach
Porto head coach Sergio Conceicao will not continue to lead the Portugal bench., a position he has held for the past seven years. In a statement sent to the Portuguese Securities Market Commission (CMVM) this morning, the club said Conceição’s time at the helm of the Dragons will end at the end of June when his contract expires.
Sergio Conceiço, who won three championships with the Dragons, was renewed on April 25 for a further four years by previous Porto president Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa. However, two days later, on April 27, Pinto da Costa lost the election, and former coach Andre Villas-Boas took over as club president.
According to Porto’s statement, Sérgio Conceição opted for a “unilateral termination of the contract”. For his part, in another statement, the coach explained that he leaves “with a sense of accomplishment” having won 11 titles. Sergio Conceiço, 49, took over Porto in 2017 and left after winning three league titles, four cups, three Portuguese Super Cups and one League Cup. During this time, he became the coach with the most games (379), the most wins (274) and the most titles (11) as the head of the blue and white team. He previously managed French club Nantes and Portuguese clubs such as Braga and Vitoria de Guimarães. His footballing career also took place at Porto, where he trained and won three league titles, although most of it was spent in Italy, where he played for Lazio, Parma and Inter Milan. Finding a new coach will be one of the first tasks of Porto’s new sporting director, Spaniard Andoni Zubizarreta.
