iconic moments
1. Like a Virgin
In 1984, Madonna released her second album without knowing that it would become one of the most iconic of her career, selling more than 25 million copies of “Like a Virgin.” She performed at the first edition of the MTV Video Music Awards that year, where she appeared dressed as a bride on a wedding cake, she ripped off her veil and rolled on the floor showing her underwear.
2. The two ‘kings’ together
Madonna took Michael Jackson as her date to the 1991 Oscars. It was quite a stir, the ceremony was full of movie stars, but these two singers were the ones who stole the camera.
3. The controversial kiss of divas
The kiss with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera in 2003. In another MTV gala, singing Hollywood, the ‘Queen of Pop’, then 45 years old, gently pounced on the lips of the then young twenty-something Spears and Aguilera. The then partner of Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, showed that he did not sit very well with her girlfriend bringing out the lesbian side of her.
4. A scandalous crucifixion
Crucified on the “Confessions Tour” in 2006. Madonna sang “Live to tell” emulating Jesus Christ and expiating humanity’s guilt for the victims of AIDS in Africa. The Vatican branded the show blasphemy and NBC censored it.
5. Her ‘look’ inspired a generation
Her classic rebel girl style inspired an entire generation in the 1980s and 1990s. The video shoot for one of her most famous hits, “Papa Don’t Preach,” which addresses the controversial issue of abortion, was a example of this.
6. Record in the Superbowl
The musical performance at the intermission of the Superbowl final in 2012, the most watched in history, was a self-tribute to itself. Madonna, in a way, took up the idea of the 2013 MTV Awards, performing a medley with some of her biggest hits in the company of LMFAO, Nicki Minaj, MIA, Cee-Lo Green and Cirque Du Soleil.
