Man wins €285m after returning orange juice from supermarket because it was too expensive

The life of Tayeb Souami, an accountant from New Jersey, took an unexpected turn when he least expected it. At 56, Souami found himself in very difficult financial situation. He remortgaged his home to pay for his two children’s college educations, leaving the family’s finances in dire straits. Like many American families, he and his wife were keen to cut corners on every expense, even small things like basic Orange juice.

One day Suami returned home with bottle of juicewhich he bought at a ShopRite supermarket in Hackensack, New Jersey. The bottle cost just over 4 euros, which was too much for his wife, who asked Taieb to return to the supermarket to return it. According to her, they could get the same product for half the price at another nearby store. Suami was a little annoyed at having to go back to the supermarket, but he decided to listen to his wife and return to the store to demand a refund.

What seemed like a simple return became a pivotal moment in Tayeb’s life. While standing in line for his refund, Suami saw an advert lottery “Powerball.” Without thinking twice, he decided to use the money he had received to buy two lottery tickets. Although he had returned to the store to save money, his instinct to try his luck overcame his financial prudence.

The next day, while washing his car, Tayeb remembered the lottery tickets he had bought and decided to check them at a 7-Eleven store. The first ticket was not a winner, but after running the second ticket through the scanner, the machine gave an unexpected message: “An employee needs to see it.” The man, convinced that it was a mistake, handed the ticket to the cashier, who, after reading the information, could not contain her surprise and exclaimed: “Oh, my God, oh my God!” At that moment, Tayeb Souami learned that he had just won. 315 million dollarswhich is equivalent to approximately 285 million euros.

News of his recent success spread quickly, and the local press quickly contacted Suami to tell his story. Despite his sudden wealth, Suami remained humble and focused on his family’s needs. He stated that his top priority was to provide for the future of their childrenbetween the ages of 20 and 17, especially in regards to their higher education. Although his newly acquired wealth would allow him to live a more comfortable life, Suami made it clear that he had no intention of spending large sums on extravagant luxury. However, he joked that he would be buying a lot more orange juice from now on: “I like orange juice now.”
