‘Mayo’ Zambada, the legendary leader of the Sinaloa Cartel and ‘enemy’ of Los Chapitos – El Financiero

After the arrest of Ovidio Guzmán on Thursday, January 5, a version that circulates is that Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada turned him over to the authorities, which caused discontent among ‘Los Chapitos’, cell of the Sinaloa Cartel to which the son of Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán belonged.

The journalist Antonio Nieto said that due to the situation, there is a possibility that the confrontations in the area will grow, and he even said that Zambada’s response to “Los Chapitos” was “they relax or we relax them” as a warning.

‘El Mayo’ Zambada is one of the most famous drug traffickers in Mexico, and with more than 40 years in organized crimewas never apprehended by the authorities.

Although the Mexican authorities have not succeeded in arresting ‘El Mayo’, he is one of the most wanted capos by the United States government, which offers 15 million dollars for his captureaccording to information collected by BBC.

During the trial of ‘Chapo’ in the United States, the drug trafficker’s defense said that ‘El Mayo’ dodged the law for decades due to bribery of public officials.

Jeffrey Litchman, one of ‘Chapo’s’ lawyers during the 2018 trials, argued that Guzmán Loera was an “inimportant” figure in the Sinaloa Cartel, while Zambada was the leader.

The ‘Mayo’ Zambada formula to avoid jail

Francisco Jiménez Reynoso, a researcher at the University of Guadalajara, said that ‘El Mayo’ avoided prison thanks to corruption and impunity.

Specialists on the subject point out that Ismael Zambada works more like a businessman in the Sinaloa Cartel, and the United States Office of Foreign Assets Control argues that is responsible for the operations of the organization.

Zambada has a more discreet attitude with respect to other drug trafficking leaders in Mexico, according to specialists, who assure that he rarely uses violence to make his way with their criminal organization, and they don’t attack the population either.
