Medical students protest the transfer to Toledo

A large group of students from the Faculty of Medicine of Albacete have gathered at the entrance of the academic center to protest the training itinerary for the transfer of students from Albacete and Ciudad Real to the Toleddo University Hospital Complex that is mandatory from the 2023 academic year -2024 to 35 students from the Albacete faculty and 15 from Ciudad Real, those who entered the last positions based on their grades, to attend four years at the Toledo hospital.

Although the protesters knew that there would be a transfer of students from the Faculties of Medicine of Albacete and Ciudad Real to the University Hospital of Toledo, however, their demands are being made now because it was barely a month ago when the plan of studies of this itinerary and the teaching staff that will teach it, and therefore there are many doubts that those affected have about the future of their academic training.

As stated by the students Pablo Rubio, second year of Medicine, and Lucía Lara, third year, and student delegate of the Faculty, everything goes back to the year 2016 when the UCLM approved to increase the number of places in the Faculties of Medicine of Albacete and Ciudad Real. It is precisely this excess of students that now wants to be transferred, once they have completed the first two years of Medicine in Albacete or Ciudad Real, to finish their training at the Toledo Hospital Complex.

Rubio and Lara denounce that, five months after making the move to Toledo, the students have no official information on how or when a transfer will take place, about which they are concerned both about the quality of the training and the accommodation and the fact that live between Albacete and Toledo. They are uncertain about the difficulties in training between two hospitals, one of them, the new one, being in a polygon, surrounded by traffic jams, with high rents. In this context, they ask “to postpone the decision to organize things as they should to guarantee the well-being and mental health of the students.”

The shadow of a third medical school in the region, in this case in Toledo, looms.
