Mercadona clarifies the origin of its potatoes

The company, chaired by Juan Roig, announced its new summer campaign under the slogan “Our roots are returning.” Thanks to this initiative, the supermarket chain will offer 94,000 tons of potatoes, from May to September from producers from Spain. Compared to last year’s campaign, the Roig brand increased by 6% purchase of this product (94,000 tons), despite the fact that, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA), the area of ​​potato production in the country has decreased.

In particular these were raised in Andalusia, Region of Murcia, Madrid, Castile-La Mancha, Galicia, Basque Country, Canary Islands, Balearic Islands and Castile and Leon, after reaching “stable agreements” with suppliers Potato Hijolusa, Potato Gomez, Udapa, Potato Melendez, Illakamp, ​​Kadimisa, Legufruit and Mr. Chippy.

Potatoes of 100% Spanish origin will be offered in three formats: bulk, 3kg mesh and 5kg mesh. As the campaign progresses, the rest of the range will be incorporated, adding new varieties such as red potatoes, specialty varieties for side dishes, frying and microwave. As noted on the network’s website, the network “Bet on local fruits and vegetables” and that is why during the summer campaign, after the previous harvest from January to April, they offer national potatoes. In addition, they emphasize that their priority will always be to offer national products when they are available, as is the case with this campaign.

Last year shopping in a supermarket chain in Spain they managed to rise by 22%, reaching 27.142 million euros. “A strong commitment to the Spanish primary sector that gives as a result, more than 85% of Mercadona’s range is of national origin, with products grown, caught, processed or processed in Spain,” the company notes.

According to Laura Merino, potato specialist at Mercadona, “We are working to restore crops in the warmest areas to extend the national campaign as long as possible.” “For us, quality is a priority, and new potatoes are those that meet all the requirements of our customers,” he explains.
