Microsoft is adding a feature to Windows Notepad that you’ve been waiting for over 40 years

Windows Notepad was born in 1983, it is already 41 years old, and it has not undergone much change. This format has worked for decades, but now users are looking for a leap in quality, and Microsoft has decided to listen to their suggestions.

This tool received one of the biggest updates in its history in March of this year. with the advent of AI with a co-pilot. Microsoft has been modernizing Notepad over the past few years, adding small improvements like the long-awaited tabs, but this one brings another big change.

The app will add built-in spell checking to Windows 11. The improvements in version 11.2402.22.0 can be launched from the Insider program and are expected to be available to all users soon.

This is in addition to other small text improvements that have happened over the years. One of the most important came in July 2021 with the features Smart search and replace, text scaling and line breaks. for numbers.

This year also saw the introduction of dark mode, autosave, and sign out. Microsoft has focused on changing its interface to make it more attractive, but in 2024, it is betting on usability.

Microsoft explained on its Windows blog how Notepad’s automatic proofreader works, although it insists that it is extremely simple. Misspelled words in text are automatically underlined in red, as happens in other editors its ecosystem, like Word.

The spell checker will suggest changes when users select a word. Another option is to use the keyboard shortcut “Shift + F10” on the misspelled word to see spelling suggestions. The selected word will be updated immediately.

The feature is enabled by default for some documents, but is disabled for code files, Microsoft explained. The program will allow you to enable or disable the setting depending on the file type.
