More than 64 million people in the US vote early.

New York (EFE).- More than 64 million Americans have cast their early vote in person or by mail ahead of Election Day next Tuesday in the US, according to data from the NBC network.

In 2022, 161 million voters were registered (69% of the voting-age population), and on this occasion, where both parties have repeatedly encouraged registration, it is estimated that this will increase to 180 million. If so, one third of the census takers would have already voted.

equals 40% of initial votes

The 64,910,122 votes cast early are equal to 40% of the total votes cast in 2020 (158,434,567) that brought Democrat Joe Biden to the White House, who then faced and defeated Donald Trump, the candidate who will try to win again on Tuesday . For the presidency, this time against Vice President Kamala Harris, in a very tight election contest.

Of these early votes, 54% have been cast in person, unlike previous presidential votes, which were conducted during the impact of the COVID pandemic. Therefore, the majority of early voting was by mail, an issue that created a major fight because Trump opposed that type of voting and blocked funding for that purpose.

During those elections, more than 101 million votes were cast early, the most in history, NBC underlined.

major states

In the swing states that are key to the results, these are the early voting figures: 1,921,200 voters have done so in Arizona; in North Carolina, 3,622,810; in Georgia, 3,699,917; in Michigan, 2,579,954; in Wisconsin, 1,224,779; In Nevada, 945,419, and in Pennsylvania, 1,625,706.

For the 2020 elections, less than half of the states offered their voters the possibility of early voting, and all but three states (Alabama, Mississippi, and New Hampshire) do so by 2024.
