More than thirty people were killed in Russian attacks on several cities in Ukraine and a children’s hospital in Kiev was attacked
At least 32 people died this Monday in various parts of Ukraine due to the massive attacks carried out by Russia in recent hours. According to the latest count, 21 victims lost their lives in the capital Kyiv, while ten people died in the city of Krivoy Rog and another one in Dnipro, as reported by various news agencies.
The EFE agency raised the death toll in the capital to 21, with 65 injured. A children’s hospital was also damaged, with many people injured, including several children. Patients at the children’s hospital hit by the Russian missile had to be evacuated to municipal hospitals, while there are fears that people may still be under the rubble, which Ukrainian emergency services are removing.
According to Kiev Mayor Vitaliy Klychko, so far two adult deaths have been confirmed at that hospital in the Shevchenko district in the centre of the capital.
“My son Sasha was in the trauma section. There was an explosion and we had to evacuate very quickly. There were many injured children under the rubble,” Natalia Sheyan told EFE agency while waiting to be transferred outside the hospital to her native region, Chernigiv, north of Kyiv, with her child. The woman explained that her son should receive treatment again within a month, but she fears that will not be possible due to the damage caused by the attack. “Their doctor also has a head injury he sustained while protecting another child during the explosion,” the mother added.
For his part, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Telegram that the Ozmatdit children’s hospital in Kyiv is “one of the most important not only in Ukraine, but also in Europe.” “Ozmatdit has saved and restored thousands of children to health,” he added. “Now the hospital is damaged by the Russian attack, people are trapped under the rubble, and the exact number of injuries and deaths is unknown. Now everyone is helping to clear the rubble: doctors and ordinary people,” he explained.
Zelenskyy denounced that Russia cannot claim it does not know where its missiles are going and that it must be “fully accountable for all its crimes: against people, against children, against humanity in general.” “It is very important that the world no longer remains silent about this and that everyone sees what Russia is and is doing.”
According to Popko, as a result of the impact of a missile in Kiev, fragments fell in seven districts of the capital, which, in addition to causing fires in residential buildings, damaged an office building, garages, cars and a private house and the premises of a company. In the Solomensky district, two floors of a building were hit and seven people died there.
In addition to the Kiev attack, Russian missiles have hit other Ukrainian cities this Monday, such as Dnipro, Krivoy Rog, as well as Solvyanisk and Kramatorsk in the eastern region of Donetsk. According to Zelensky, Moscow has launched about 40 missiles against homes, businesses and infrastructure. “The whole world must work hard to put an end to Russian attacks once and for all,” the president urged. The Ukrainian Air Force has assured that anti-aircraft defenses managed to intercept 30 of the 38 missiles of various types launched by Russia against Ukrainian territory on Monday morning.
According to Sergey Lysak, head of the Dnipropetrovsk regional military administration, one person was killed and six injured in Dnipro, one of them in critical condition. Krivoy Rog city mayor Oleksandr Vilkul has declared a day of mourning tomorrow after ten residents were killed and 41 others injured in the Russian attack. Krivoy Rog is the hometown of the Ukrainian president and is located in the center of the country.
The UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Ukraine Denis Brown has condemned the Russian army’s attacks against Ukrainian cities, expressing regret that dozens of people have been killed and injured. In a statement, he reminded that hospitals enjoy special protection according to international law, and said that the extent of the attack on the children’s hospital in the center of Kiev is still unknown. According to the UN, since the beginning of the war in 2022, there have been nearly 1,900 attacks against healthcare services in Ukraine, of which more than 1,600 directly against hospitals or health centers.
The Russian Defence Ministry has denied deliberately attacking civilian targets in Ukraine during massive bombings of military industry companies and Ukrainian airports this morning.
