Morocco inaugurated on Monday the country’s first laboratory for the medical and industrial use of cannabis, reports the news agency anadolu.

In a statement, the Bio Cannat Cooperative said the laboratory in the northwestern city of Chefchaouen will be used to process cannabis in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

According to the statement, the laboratory had obtained a permit for the use of cannabis in industry and medicine in October 2022.

He said the substance will be used in the food, industrial, medical and paramedical industries due to the many scientifically proven benefits in pain relief.

“Agricultural experiments will be carried out with some farmers from Chefchaouen in order to supply raw materials after having provided the seeds intended for this purpose,” he added.

Last November, the Ministry of the Interior stated that its efforts to crack down on the illegal cannabis trade had resulted in an approximate 80% drop in its cultivation.

Last year, Morocco presented a plan for the medical and industrial use of cannabis. It has also passed a law to legalize the use of the substance in industry and medicine.
