MotoGP: Jorge Martin and pole position, which could be the key to the fight for the title
The Spaniard, the World Championship leader, ten points ahead of Pecco Bagnaia, was the fastest in qualifying and will lead the 17th round in Australia. The Italian is in fifth place.
Jorge Martin was the one all MotoGP riders considered a great candidate to win the Australian Grand Prix, the 17th round of the World Championship. So much so that Pecco Bagnaia, his title rival, said in the preview: “I think in these four races our performance at each circuit will be mixed. I think there’s more to Jorge here in Australia. The goal this weekend will be to finish second.” And the classification result began to prove the two-time champion right, because Martin arrived and won pole (the third in a row at Phillip Island).
Martin was flying in very difficult runway conditions.. The day started with the asphalt wet from heavy rain, then dried out due to strong winds. In all this combination, the Spaniard was ahead of Marc Marquez by 594 thousandths, which allowed him to start ahead in the sprint and in the main events. “It was a difficult day because of the wind and the track dried out quickly. Once everything was settled, everything went well, but with strong winds,” said the tournament leader.
Pecco Bagnaia lacked speed in the final part of qualifying. He was only fifth as Maverick Viñales (third) and Marco Bezzecchi (fourth) were also ahead. The Italian, a world champion, hopes that the next two tournaments will be held in Thailand and Malaysia. Their goal in Australia will be to minimize damage.
