Mourning in football: Kaiser Franz Beckenbauer dies

Franz Beckenbauer, considered the greatest German football legend of all time, world champion as a player in 1974 and as a coach in 1990, died on Sunday, January 7, aged 78. He was also a three-time winner of the former European Cup with Bayern Munich and the European Championship with Germany.

He has been withdrawn from public life in recent years due to health problems and a scandal sparked by alleged irregularities in his work to secure the 2006 World Cup for Germany.

Along with the recently deceased Mario Zagallo of Brazil and France’s Didier Deschamps, they are the only men to have won the World Cup as players and coaches.

Franz Beckenbauer’s family announces his death

“It is with deep sadness that we announce that our father and my husband Franz Beckenbauer passed away peacefully on Sunday, surrounded by his family. We ask that we be able to grieve in peace and not ask questions,” his family said.

It was on this Monday that the First German Television Network (ARD) planned to broadcast a new documentary about the life of Beckenbauer, which, in addition to archival images, contains statements from his former Bayern teammates such as Sepp Maier or Paul Breitner: and from the German team, such as Günter Netzer.
