Movies: these are the most anticipated film releases in 2023 – Cinema and Tv – Culture

Movies like Top Gun: Maverick, Jurassic World: Dominion, and most recently “Avatar: The Shape of Water” posted huge box office numbers in 2022. That’s the good news for moviegoers and the movie industry. The bad news is that the viewership numbers for the year gone by are still nowhere near pre-pandemic levels. Could 2023 be the year the industry triumphantly declares that things are back to pre-Covid?

Here is a selection of 16 titles that will be released in 2023 (in chronological order of release) and that could be crucial when it comes to dictating the speed at which cinema recovers.

1.til

Based on shocking true events that occurred in the American South in the 1950s, Till is the story of 14-year-old Emmett Till, who was kidnapped and murdered after being accused of whistling at a white woman.

It shows how Emmett’s mother, Mamie Till-Mobley, faced an almost impossible fight trying to get justice for her dead son.

Danielle Deadwyler, who plays Mamie, delivers a powerful performance that could well earn Oscar recognition.

(Theatrical release: January 2023).

2. The Whale (“The whale”)

Actor Brendan Fraser is on the horizon for an Oscar for his extraordinary performance in one of the most unusual and moving stories of the year.

Fraser plays a morbidly obese teacher living in a tiny apartment desperately trying to reunite with his estranged daughter.

The film has been acclaimed at various film festivals and is expected to be a contender for multiple awards. The rest of the cast, which includes Hong Chau, Sadie Sink, and Samantha Morton, are very supportive.

(Theatrical release: January 2023 / in the United States it was released in December).

3. Tar

Cate Blanchett has been garnering awards and critical acclaim for her portrayal of composer and conductor Lydia Tár, a musician who has risen to the top of her profession.

But things change when unexpected pressures begin to affect his life and work.

Blanchett has already been the recipient of two Academy Awards. She won her first Oscar in 2005 and her second, nine years later, in 2014.

So, at least mathematically, nine years later it is set to win the prestigious award again in a few months. And it probably will.

4. The Fabelmans

This is the most personal film of Steven Spielberg’s half-century career. It is a fictional version of his own childhood, in which he grew up in a broken family.

It shows his sometimes difficult relationship with his parents. He explains how as a child she fell in love with cinema. And how that obsession turned into the career that has already given him two Oscars as a director, and could give him a third with this film.

(Theatrical release: February 2023).

5. “Empire of Light”

The Sam Mendes Love Letter is set in a small seaside movie theater during the 1980s and stars Oscar winner Olivia Colman as the film’s director.

When a new ticket salesman is hired, played by Bafta winner Micheal Ward, the two find an unlikely connection. Mendes’ story explores everything from romance to racism to misogyny and mental health.

And Colman, as always, is being talked about as a contender for acting honors at awards season.

6. “Guardians of the Galaxy 3”

“I am Groot.” “I am Groot.” Pause. “I am Groot.”

Translation, if you need it: The galaxy’s favorite mismatched group of heroes return to attempt a mission that this time, it’s strongly rumored, will put one member of the team under deadly threat.

Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Karen Gillan, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Pom Klementieff and Dave Bautista join Will Poulter, whose character Adam Warlock was first hinted at in a post-credits sequence in volume 2.

7. “The Flower Moon Killers”

This budding project has on paper perhaps the strongest pedigree of the 2023 movies.

Award-winning director Martin Scorsese directs award-winning Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro. As well as (another possible future Oscar winner) Brendan Fraser.

This is a 1920s drama that follows the investigation of the murders of a series of wealthy people in Osage County, Oklahoma, after the discovery of large oil fields.

(Theatrical release: May 2023 / to be confirmed).

8. “Spider-Man: A New Universe 2”

This CGI sequel to 2018’s “A New Universe” sees Miles Morales traveling between alternate universes again.

In addition to developing his relationship with Gwen Stacy’s Spider-Woman, he also comes into contact with a larger group of Spider-People, including an older Spider-Man, a British Spider-Man, and a pregnant Spider-Woman.

Shameik Moore returns to voice Miles. He is joined by Hailee Steinfeld, Issa Rae and Daniel Kaluuya.

(Theatrical release: June 2023).

9. “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Fate”

While the films in the original Indiana Jones trilogy are considered by many to be classics, the fourth, “Reign of the Crystal Skull,” is known as a horrible flop.

And that film’s alleged plan to hand over the baton to Indy’s rediscovered son, Shia LaBoeuf’s Mutt, appears to have been abandoned.

This time around, Harrison Ford as Indy is joined by new actors like Toby Jones, Antonio Banderas and Phoebe Waller-Bridge. As well as the return of John Rhys-Davies.

10. “Mission Impossible: Deadly Judgment Part I”

The seventh installment in the “Mission Impossible” franchise promises the usual mix of outlandish sets, high-octane chases and sphincter-squeezing stunts.

We assume that Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt will fight again to save the world from some kind of nefarious global plot.

The first trailers show the expected locations. And supported by a roster of returning characters.

11.Barbie

The first images of the Barbie movie almost broke the internet. And it’s hard to think of a more perfect cast than Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as the fashion dolls that have been the stars of the Mattel line for decades: Barbie and Ken.

It’s been billed as a rom-com, but aside from that, plot details are pretty sparse.

Whatever the plot, audiences are already eagerly awaiting what promises to be a visual feast of primary colors.

12.oppenheimer

The latest epic from director Christopher Nolan is the story of physicist J Robert Oppenheimer, often dubbed the father of the atomic bomb.

Oppenheimer was one of the leading members of the Manhattan Project, which led to the creation of the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

And he was one of the witnesses to the first atomic detonation test in history in New Mexico.

Cillian Murphy plays Oppenheimer and Emily Blunt plays his wife, Kitty.

(Theatrical release: July 2023).

13. “Dune: Part Two”

The first Dune movie ambitiously billed itself as “Dune: Part One.”

But that confidence was confirmed when audiences flocked to what turned out to be the movie equivalent of the much-coveted spice from the planet Arrakis.

This film will broadly narrate the second half of the original novel by author Frank Herbert.

Timothée Chalamet returns as Paul Atreides, as does Zendaya as Chani. Florence Pugh is Princess Irulan.

(Theatrical release: November 2023).

14. “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes”

The original quartet of Hunger Games movies (“The Hunger Games”) followed the rise of Katniss Everdeen, played by Jennifer Lawrence.

Now this prequel, set more than half a century earlier, follows the young Coriolanus Snow, when he had yet to become a ruthless despot, though the clues are there for keen observers.

Tom Blyth plays the young Coriolanus Snow. Also appearing in the film are Rachel Zegler and Hunter Schafer.

(Theatrical release: November 2023).

15.Wonka

The most famous and eccentric chocolate businessman in literature has already been played by Gene Wilder in “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” and by Johnny Depp in “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.”

This time it’s Timothée Chalamet’s turn to play a younger version of Wonka in this prequel to Roald Dahl’s original story.

Sally Hawkins, Olivia Colman, Jim Carter, and Matt Lucas also star in the film.

(Theatrical release: December 2023).

16. “Napoleon”

The great Stanley Kubrick spent many years trying to make a film about the life of Napoleon, but never succeeded, leaving the plans in exile on Elba.

Now, Ridley Scott has succeeded where Kubrick failed.

Scott’s version of the emperor’s life uses Josephine, Napoleon’s wife, as a lens through which to view one of history’s most extraordinary characters.

Vanessa Kirby plays Josephine, while Joaquin Phoenix takes on the role of Napoleon.
