Xiaomi phones are generally known for their excellent battery capacity. However, you might have noticed that your device drains considerably even without performing demanding tasks.
understanding the battery drain issue
In some cases, the battery drain could be due to a software glitch, a resource-intensive app in use, or simply because your device is old and the battery’s lifespan is nearing its end. Yet, an often overlooked factor contributing to rapid battery depletion is the additional settings and features offered by the company on their phones.
Xiaomi’s operating system, HyperOS, along with MIUI for users who haven’t updated yet, is packed with these settings. While they enhance user experience and make the device highly customizable, they significantly affect battery longevity. By disabling these three settings, you will notice a substantial improvement in your phone’s battery life.
the always-on display feature
Xiaomi smartphones come with a feature known as Always-On Display which, as the name suggests, keeps the screen of the device constantly illuminated even when not in use. This feature displays relevant information such as time and notifications as well as animations or designs. Although it doesn’t consume as much power as when the screen is fully on, it can still cause faster battery drain.
To conserve some battery life, it’s advisable to disable this feature. Navigate to Settings > Always-On Display & Lock Screen and turn off this option.
beware of high refresh rate settings
Many Xiaomi devices offer the ability to adjust a refresh rate of 120 Hz for smoother transitions on the screen. The downside is that this leads to rapid battery consumption; especially when the refresh rate is high and non-adaptive – meaning it doesn’t change depending on what’s displayed on the screen.
To disable it, go to Settings > Display and access the refresh rate option. Xiaomi presents various choices here; it’s most advisable to disable high refresh rates and set it at 60 Hz.
system daemon: another silent drainer
An often unnoticed setting that contributes to unnecessary battery usage is System Daemon. This option consumes approximately 6% of battery life daily.
- Navigate to Settings > Fingerprint & face unlock & lock screen > Authorization & revocation
- Deselect the ‘System Daemon’ checkbox.
