NATO warns Russia after drone attack in Poland – DW – 08/26/2024
NATO indicated this Monday (08/26/2024) that it lacked information indicating that the unidentified object that entered Polish airspace that same day was part of a deliberate attack by Russia, which has stepped up its attacks against Ukraine, but warned the government in Moscow that these acts – which have also happened before – are “irresponsible and potentially dangerous.”
Farah Dakhlallah, a spokesperson for the Atlantic Alliance, declared, “Although we have no information indicating a deliberate attack by Russia against allies, these acts are irresponsible and potentially dangerous.” Dakhlallah added that “since the start of the large-scale Russian offensive in 2022, the remains of drones and missiles have been found on allied territory on several occasions.”
Poland reported on the same day that an object, probably a drone, entered its airspace earlier in the day, at the time of massive Russian attacks against Ukraine. More than 70 police and paramilitary forces are searching for the remains of the object in Tyszowice (eastern Poland), with several helicopters also involved in the operation.
“Cowardly Russian Attack”
The Russian attack that day, the largest since the beginning of the war according to Ukrainian sources, provoked a reaction among allies. For example, the United States described what happened as “outrageous.” “We strongly condemn Russia’s continued war against Ukraine and its attempts to plunge the Ukrainian people into darkness,” declared the US spokesman for the National Security Council, John Kirby.
Meanwhile, Germany reiterated its support for Ukraine. On the other hand, the United Kingdom “condemned the cowardly Russian attack with missiles and drones against civilian infrastructure,” the Foreign Ministry published.
