New York is committed to urban air mobility and is giving Skyports a new helipad.
New York has taken a major step toward the future of urban air mobility by creating Skyports as operator of the midtown Manhattan heliport, one of the city’s most iconic aviation sites.
The New York City Economic Development Corporation (EDC) announced that after a competitive selection process, Downtown Skyport LLC will become the new entity responsible for operating the helipad. The organization is an alliance between Skyports Infrastructure, a British vertiport developer that also operates London’s helicopter facility, and a French group. ADP Groupresponsible for managing the main airports of Paris and other airports around the world.
ACS and Skyports
He AKS Groupthrough ACS Infra Tech & Mobility, reached an agreement last April to become an investor in Skyports, a global leader in the ownership and operation of vertiports, sustainable infrastructure for air mobility and drone flight. Skyports has two key businesses: the vertiport infrastructure needed to take off and land electric vertical take-off (eVTOL) aircraft, and a drone services division that provides logistics and transportation solutions using unmanned aerial vehicles.
This week the ACS team attended the Global Mobility Call, one of the premier events dedicated to sustainable mobility, where progress was seen on this alliance with Skyports. In the report “Pioneering the Future: Advanced Transportation for a Sustainable World” Damien Kiseliresponsible for the Skyports infrastructure in the EMEA region, presented achievements in the field of electric aviation.
The future of eVTOL in Manhattan
This award comes at a pivotal time for the electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) industry. Manned demonstration flights were conducted from a helipad in midtown Manhattan in November 2023, marking a major milestone for mobility antenna urban. These public trials were supported by Mayor Eric Adams, who committed to adapting the heliport to accommodate eVTOL operations in the future.
The heliport in midtown Manhattan is a key location for the initial integration of electric aircraft.
The heliport in midtown Manhattan is a key location for the initial integration of electric aircraft into cities due to its existing infrastructure and strategic location. However, using this eVTOL space creates problems such as compatibility with conventional helicopters and the need to redesign facilities for larger scale operations.
The project represents an ambitious transformation concept New York a world leader in urban air mobility. The heliport’s ability to accommodate electric aircraft will be a barometer for assessing how well these vehicles can integrate with existing air operations. Likewise, adding infrastructure for other purposes highlights the potential of vertiports as transport and distribution hubs in the cities of the future.
Reward Downtown Skyport LLC marks the beginning of a new era for the helipad in midtown Manhattan and promises to cement New York City as the epicenter of air mobility innovation.
