The viruses associated with the outbreak are members of the California serogroup and are typically found in North America, spread through mosquitoes that act as vectors between mammals and humans. Although cases of infection have been reported in Canada for decades, most cases are usually asymptomatic. However, some infections can progress to neuroinvasive forms with severe symptoms such as fever, tremors and, in rare cases, acute flaccid paralysis.
Authorities advised doctors to report any suspected cases to expand surveillance of the disease, and to promote the use of repellent and protective clothing to avoid mosquito bites.
