One dead and more than 3,000 evacuated as storm hits Italy
Madrid 20 October (Europa Press) –
One person has died and more than 3,100 people have been evacuated as the storm dumped record rainfall of up to 175 millimeters per square meter in the city of Bologna in the Reggio Emilia region.
The figure, counted from Saturday afternoon, is more than double the average of 70 millimeters historically recorded for the entire month of October, reports Italian news agency AGI.
The deceased is a 20-year-old man who was in a car when the Zena stream overflowed near Botteghino di Zocca in the Pianoro municipality.
15 rivers in the area have crossed the red limit and firefighters have made more than 600 interventions. The rescue coordination centers of all provinces are already activated, as is the entire civil protection system, with 350 volunteers in Emilia-Romagna, adding a further 180 from Piedmont, Friuli-Venice Giulia, Lazio, Umbria and Have gone. 120 others from Trento and other Italian institutions.
The rains have caused flooding in many areas of Bologna, leaving sewage systems unable to absorb water.
Additionally, about 15,000 customers suffered power outages overnight, although that figure dropped to 4,000 on Sunday morning, mostly in the province of Bologna.
