Open world games like Skyrim to play in 2023

Skyrim is one of the most celebrated and well-known open-world games ever made, and it has a legion of fans who can’t get enough of it. But once you’ve seen everything Skyrim has to do with it, what other similar games can fans try out? We have nine other great open world games for you to explore.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is considered one of the best open world games of all time. It’s one of those titles that comes along and changes a genre forever, which may explain why there’s such a buzz around the Elder Scrolls 6 announcement. Even in 2023, the game still looks great on modern consoles and PCs.

However, as iconic as it is, Skyrim is not unique. There are plenty of other similar games for Skyrim fans to enjoy. While Skyrim is still popular, it came out in 2011 and the games have evolved ever since, so let’s look at a few.

We could simply recommend Elder Scrolls 1-4, but we’ll focus on other games like Skyrim instead.

The Elder Scrolls Online

The Elder Scrolls Online is a very different experience than Skyrim – it’s an MMO, so the game focuses on multiplayer rather than solo adventure. However, the basic premise of quests in Tamriel is the same, and you can even explore Skyrim over 1000 years before the Dragonborn rose to prominence.

Those looking for more Elder Scrolls before the sixth main entry arrives will be well served. Just remember that this is an MMO first and foremost, so it won’t suit every Dovakhin’s taste.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

The next Witcher game could star Ciri

In our opinion, The Witcher 3 is a game that could measure up to Skyrim. Whether it was better than Bethesda’s masterpiece is a matter of individual opinion, but the third installment of Geralt’s game was certainly something special, standing shoulder to shoulder with our mission in the northernmost province of Tamriel.

Like Bethesda’s games, The Witcher 3 is full of often awkward, morally gray choices that allow you to subtly influence the game world and control the narrative. However, the real star of the game is the polished open world that really raised the bar in terms of design and exploration.

The next game in the series is also in development, with a remake of the first adventure.

Dragon Age Inquisition

Inquisition is the third installment in Dragon Age and the first game in the series to be released on PS4 and Xbox One. This meant that it was much more visually impressive than previous games and it still holds up today, especially on PS5 or as part of Xbox. GamesPass.

A classic Dungeon and Dragons-style adventure, Dragon Age Inquisition is of the fantasy genre, but it also tells a story filled with political intrigue, conspiracy, and betrayal. While it wasn’t as iconic as Skyrim, it’s a must-play for fans of the genre.

fallout 4

Believe it or not, those looking for more Skyrim would be well served by Fallout 4, despite being set in a completely different genre. Instead of being a medieval fantasy adventure, Fallout 4 is set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, centuries after the world was devastated by nuclear war.

However, as the Fallout series is developed by Bethesda, the gameplay has many similarities. Fallout 4 was even built on the same engine as Skyrim, and this becomes immediately apparent when the NPCs start talking.

Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen

Dragon’s Dogma is a very interesting game, as Capcom combined elements of Skyrim, Dark Souls, and its own Monster Hunter series to create an open-world fantasy sandbox. The game is also available on Nintendo Switch, which means it can be played on the go.

Its main draw is the pawn system, a mechanic that allows you to summon other player’s characters as NPC companions. While not perfect, Dragon’s Dogma has amassed a cult following over the years, many of whom yearn for a true sequel.

Capcom announced that the long-awaited sequel was in development during the game’s ten-year livestream celebrations.

Middle-earth: Shadow of War

Set in Peter Jackson’s interpretation of Tolkien’s Middle-earth, Shadow of War is the sequel to the equally impressive Shadow of Mordor. The game is set between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings and sees Talion face off against Sauron in a bitter war for the Ring of Might.

The game is a fantasy adventure like Skyrim, but its main point is the Nemesis system. This is a mechanic that allows players to create rivalries with NPC enemies based on previous battles. Other games, including some racing sims, have even adopted similar systems after seeing it work so well.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance

Kingdom Come strips away the fantasy and instead tells a grounded, brutal story of medieval life set in 15th-century Bohemia. There are no dragons or magic in Kingdom Come: Deliverance, but the game still manages to be compelling.

Much of the gameplay resembles Skyrim and The Witcher 3, but Kingdom Come’s more realistic approach raises the stakes for the player. Either you learn to master the bow, sword, and other elements of medieval life, or you risk becoming a footnote in someone else’s story.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Soon we will have the second part

If The Witcher 3 was considered Skyrim’s first potential killer, then Breath of the Wild was the next contender. Nintendo gave the classic Zelda formula a radical shakeup, creating a vast world with an emphasis on exploration and player choice.

Link really has to earn his robes, the Master Sword, and the Shield of Hyrule this time around, starting off by beating Bokoblins with sticks and rocks. As always, the goal is to save Princess Zelda after a showdown with Ganon, but you’ve got a ways to go, and you’ll love every minute of it.

Elden Ring

Following in the footsteps of Skyrim, Breath of The Wild, and The Witcher 3, Elden Ring represents the next evolution in open-world gaming. The game took the tried and tested formula of Dark Souls and expanded it into an epic sandbox adventure, raising the bar for both dungeon crawling and open world gaming at the same time.

As players eagerly await downloadable content, Elden Ring is still going strong. The game is primarily a single player experience, but it is possible to summon cooperative allies into your world through summoning parties. This is especially useful against tough bosses.

Be careful though, as summoning players into the Elden Ring can also lead to players invading your world to steal your Runes. This adds a tense element to the game, as PvP battles can be dangerous, but exciting.

And these are our open world games for 2023, in case you haven’t played them. Also, we expect The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, sequel to Breath of the Wild, to be released this year as well.
