A-list celebrities Oprah Winfrey and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson have announced the launch of an initiative to support victims of the Hawaii wildfires.

In a statement on Thursday, the celebrities unveiled a new ‘Maui People’s Fund’ fund aimed at helping those whose lives have been ravaged by the climate disaster. Both have committed $10 million to make direct payments to affected islanders and are accepting cryptocurrency donations.

“I’ve met with people from all over the communities affected by the fires over the past few weeks asking what they need most and how I can help,” the popular television presenter said in a statement.

“This new fund will serve as a bridge to provide cash directly to affected families and individuals so that they can individually determine how to best use the funds,” the note said. 100% of the donation will go to those affected in Maui, “The Rock” confirmed in a video.

Every resident over the age of 18 who lives in one of the affected areas and has been displaced by wildfires will be eligible to receive US$1,200 per month in recovery assistance.

cryptocurrency donation
The fund accepts donations in a variety of fiat currencies as well as cryptocurrencies. A bottom tab in the donation section of the Maui People’s Fund website allows you to display a window for payments in a variety of digital currencies, including bitcoin ( ), ether (ETH), (DOGE), as well as various stable coins. Total, dailybitcoin could count Over 50 different cryptocurrencies for donation.

The Winfrey and Johnson campaign is not the only one collecting cryptocurrency as a donation to help the victims in Hawaii. As Cointelegraph points out, other efforts, including the All Hands and Hearts organization to help local Maui residents after the fires, are also accepting funds in digital currencies and other forms of money.

“Cryptocurrency donations, like any other form of charity, are helping to provide much-needed aid in the aftermath of the devastating wildfires,” said Olga Ruggiero, Head of Organizational Integration and Programs at All Hands & Hearts. “The cryptocurrency industry continues to connect with communities in need around the world.”

natural disaster on maui
Rescue teams have been working around the clock since early August after catastrophic wildfires broke out in the Lahaina and Kula areas on the island of Maui. With over 100 confirmed deaths, it is the deadliest fire in recent memory and one of the “worst natural disasters of the last century” in the United States.

The fire has caused widespread devastation in Lahaina, a northwest Maui resort town of about 13,000 residents. According to National Geographic, it is estimated that about 2 million tourists visit the region every year.

According to statistics from Wikipedia, these events have displaced at least 11,000 people and destroyed over 2,000 buildings and caused an estimated US$5.5 billion in damage.

Like other similar fires around the world, this one has no single identifiable cause. In any case, high winds and dry weather conditions contributed to the rapid spread of the fire. The disaster is the latest sign of the devastating effects of climate change and the human footprint on the planet.
