Secret Twitter documents that were declassified by order of the CEO of said social network, Elon Musk, and that the renowned American journalist Matthew C. Taibbi, editor of stackshow that the last presidential campaign of Gustavo Petro would have received a strong boost from Russia with false accounts, hashtags orchestrated and mentions.
In a thread on the social network, published this Tuesday, Taibbi disclosed some documents that expose Russian undue interference in the public debate in Colombia. The files show the trends and the accounts that would have helped the electoral interests of the then presidential candidate of the Historical Pact and current president.
The revelation has generated reactions on social networks from political leaders of different parties.
One of them was Senator Jota Pe Hernández, from the Green Alliance, who pointed out that from Russia “they used bots in favor of Gustavo Petro’s campaign.”
“AMAZING!! Elon Musk himself, owner of Twitter, validated and showed the world how Russia used BOTS in favor of Gustavo Petro’s campaign! With fake users, Scheduled Hashtags and thousands and thousands of mentions, they positioned the campaign on Twitter! #ZeroLineEthics”, he expressed.
For his part, former presidential candidate Enrique Gómez, director of the National Salvation Movement, assured that “Russian accounts supported and surely support everything related to Petro and the Historical Pact.”
“The scope is incredible, the damage that these types of strategies have been doing to democracies on the continent,” he added.
Meanwhile, Senator Paloma Valencia, from the Democratic Center, questioned: “So Petro is supported by Russian Twitter accounts?”
The bot accounts
between accounts bots detected, as revealed this Tuesday, are @ yesid70202528; @fernandohinca01; @willj84753699; @jaime528629; @nanderas3; @esperanzaprie16; @cegatalisman2; @edwinpa81364652; and @alonso15922455.
Between the hashtags detected were #PactoHistorico, #PetroPresidente2022 and #PetroPresidenteColombia2022.
Twitter detected the unusual behavior of bots, in 2021, during routine monitoring, with a special focus on Venezuela, Cuba and Colombia. For Twitter, this is coordinated inauthentic behavior.
On social networks, different users have always complained and denounced massive attacks when they criticize the current president or the Historical Pact. It is what many have called a coordinated attack “warehouse.”
During the campaign, it was learned that Sebastián Guanumen, one of the leaders of Petro’s digital strategy, gave the order to “run the ethical line” to discredit the contenders of the then candidate Petro. In this sense, digital narratives were created in which lies, insults and slander were appealed to.
