New York (EFE). Legendary coach Gregg Popovich has stepped down as coach of the San Antonio Spurs indefinitely due to health concerns, ESPN reports.
According to the publication, Popovich “had health issues” ahead of Saturday’s game against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Because of this, he was absent from the bench in that match.
"Se espera que el entrenador asistente Mitch Johnson sea el entrenador interino por un periodo indefinido incluyendo el partido de este lunes contra Los Angeles Clippers y el del miércoles ante los Houston Rockets", divulgó ESPN, que no dio detalles sobre los problemas de salud del técnico.
Popovic: Spurs architect
Considered one of the best coaches in basketball history, Popovich, 75, is synonymous with success, perseverance and dedication to the Spurs, which he has led continuously since the 1996-97 season.
Popovich completely changed the DNA of the franchise and helped the Spurs win five rings (1999, 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2014).
Popovich’s remarkable NBA career is associated with the basketball myth of Tim Duncan and other great players. Notable among them are David Robinson, Kawhi Leonard, Tony Parker and Argentine Manu Ginobili, who have all contributed to the Spurs’ success.
Since last year, he has had the responsibility of modeling generational talent such as Frenchman Victor Vembanyama at Spurs.
