Renewal of bites due to high autumn temperatures
He episode of high temperatures experienced by O Morrazo The last weeks of October and the first days of November see a sharp increase in the presence of tiger mosquitoes in the region. There are numerous consultations in municipalities and health centers regarding painful bites that cause irritation for several days. This is confirmed by Environmental Advisor Moanyi, Dolores Chapelawhich has been fighting this invasive species since August 2023, after the first specimen in all of Galicia was recorded in Moana.
Since the middle of last week, bites have become more frequent, and a large number of larvae have appeared. This region is the most sensitive in all of Galicia, since last week, out of 19 samples registered through the application, Mosquito Alert12 of them were in O Morrazo and seven in the city of Vigo, receiving all notifications from all over Galicia.
In Cangues territory, two specimens were discovered in Coiro last Saturday, November 2, as well as another that appeared in the same parish on Wednesday, and another discovered in Aldana this weekend.
As usual, most cases are concentrated in Moana, where the first tiger mosquitoes were discovered and where the population is more receptive to warnings about the presence of new specimens. All notifications came from the parish of Tiran, the worst affected by the problem, also in late summer 2023. Of these, three are from the O-Real urban area and correspond to November 1, and up to five are instances located in other places. Districts of Tirana.
This situation contrasts with the situation observed between September and October, when at the last meeting of the supervisory committee, entomologists from Galician universities explained that no larvae were found in the Moanha traps, which was good news at that time.
However, it was already announced that the risk period had been extended until the end of November, taking into account expert forecasts that temperatures would continue to remain high in November. The last meeting of the oversight committee of the year will take place later this month, although the date has not yet been determined.
Moreover, in the same week in Moana, despite the resumption of rains, The maximum temperature will range from 21 to 23 degrees. until Sunday, with the dawn minimum temperature not falling below the 12 degrees expected by the end of the week. The absence of cold nights favors the hatching of larvae.
Moañes City Council insists that residents monitor water accumulation and drain it in less than four days to avoid new outbreaks of this invasive species. They assume that this species has already established itself in the south of Galicia, but are trying to destroy its population.
No risk
In any case, despite this rebound and the pain caused by tiger mosquito bites, they are usually not dangerous, since no specimens with dengue, chikungunya or Zika viruses have been found in the community, since in other areas of the planet these mosquitoes are the vector of transmission of these viruses.
