Russia fired more than forty missiles against Ukraine – DW – 01/23/2024

Among the weapons used, 15 cruise missiles and 12 other ballistic missiles are prominent. Ukrainian Air Defense Forces claim that they managed to shoot down all the cruise missiles. As far as ballistic missiles are concerned, 5 out of 12 could have been intercepted before they reached their targets.

The main target of the attacks was once again the capital, Kiev, where many residents woke up to the sound of explosions and took refuge in the metro for more than two hours due to anti-aircraft alarms announcing the arrival of missiles.

As reported by Kiev’s military administration, the Russians for the first time launched multiple cruise missiles at Kiev, fired in two separate waves from aircraft located in the airspace of the Russian Federation. And, when those missiles reached the capital, Russian forces fired a new round of ballistic missiles.

“About twenty air targets have been hit in Kiev by air defense and other (defense) means,” the city’s military administration wrote on its Telegram account. “But this joint missile attack on the capital has resulted in damage and casualties,” the note acknowledged.

At least five people were killed across Ukraine during these attacks, while dozens were injured.

One of the victims died in Kiev and three others died in the northeastern city of Kharkiv, where a missile destroyed a residential building, injuring several people.

The fifth victim died in the city of Pavlograd in Ukraine’s Dnepropetrovsk Oblast.
