German intelligence services warn of activities that could influence elections

The German Interior Ministry’s intelligence services, the Office for the Protection of the German Constitution (BfV), warned this Friday of possible campaigns by foreign countries aimed at influencing the general elections on February 23.

As the BfV points out on its website, “both disinformation and defamatory actions and cyber-attacks, espionage and sabotage” are possible within the framework of election calls. “Illegal influence activities are a classic area of action for foreign intelligence services,” the BfV said in an article about “The threat to general elections due to unauthorized foreign influence”.

As recalled by the BfV, the aim of these operations was to “covertly influence decision makers and officials of other states”, but also “to influence the free process of opinion formation and decision making”, for the upcoming German election campaign. Some may be the subject of impact activities.

The BFV article placed its election notice in the context of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, a conflict in which Moscow has “the greatest and most obvious interest” in influencing elections that could shape the political future of European countries ranging from Germany to Kiev. Has provided maximum military assistance.
