Sainz sanctioned in Miami for contact with Piastri and loses position

The results of the 2024 Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix were changed after the conclusion of the race as a result of the ongoing investigation into Carlos Sainz over the Oscar Piastri incident.

Both drivers battled for fourth place throughout the race, lightly touching each other twice.

Here’s how it went:

The first came when the Spaniard missed the gate at Turn 11, with the Australian Formula One driver covering his position. The stewards analyzed this maneuver, but found no reason to punish Piastri.

A few laps later, Sainz overtook Piastri at Turn 17 and there was a collision which resulted in the McLaren driver damaging his front wing, forcing him to pit and lose any chance of scoring points.

Career direction He advised that he would investigate this second incident late in the race, and Sainz continued on the track to finish fourth at the finish.

Both drivers were called to give evidence and the stewards eventually decided to penalize Sainz with five seconds and one point on his licence.

With the Ferrari driver crossing the line 3.243 seconds ahead of Sergio Perez, the Mexican driver took advantage of the penalty to take fourth place, leaving Sainz in fifth.

Explanation of the stewards of the Formula 1 Grand Prix in Miami 2024 regarding the sanctions against Sainz:

“The stewards listened to the driver of Car 81 (Oscar Piastri), the driver of Car 55 (Carlos Sainz), team officials, reviewed video evidence and determined that Car 55 was overtaking Car 81 at Turn 17 when it slightly overshot the rear and collided with Car 81. As a result of the collision, the front wing of car 81 was damaged.”

“It was clear to us that car 55 was at fault for the collision. While attempting to overtake, car 55 braked late, missed the apex and in the process lost its rear end, causing the collision. Although car 81 tried to turn to counteract the overtaking attempt, car 81 left enough room for car 55.

“In the circumstances, we believe that Car 55 was the primary cause of the collision. In this case, we have taken into account as mitigating factors the fact that, but for the minor loss of control of the rear of Car 55, the collision probably would not have occurred, and this it would be a tough but good race. The standard penalty for a collision is 10 seconds with 2 demerit points. Given the mitigating circumstances, we impose a penalty of 5 seconds with 1 demerit point.”
