The government’s president, Pedro Sanchez, will travel to the Vatican on Friday where he will be welcomed by Pope Francis to “join efforts in favor of peace” given the “seriousness” of events in the Middle East.

The acting head will meet the Pope at 9:00 am on October 11 and at the end of the audience at the Vatican, he will travel to Cyprus to attend the MED9 summit, which brings together the countries of Southern Europe. To “exchange views” on issues of common interest before the next European Council, reports the Secretary of State for Communications.

The Office of the President of the Government said, “Given the seriousness of events taking place in the Middle East, President Sánchez wishes to continue to join forces in favor of peace, urging diplomacy and dialogue rather than military means.” The meeting is taking place in the context of rising tensions in the Middle East and in view of a possible Israeli attack against Iran in response to an attack of about 200 missiles against its territory last Tuesday.
