Saoirse Ronan reveals she was meant to be ‘Weird Barbie’ in Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie’
Saoirse Ronan has revealed that she was originally slated to star in Greta Gerwig’s summer hit Barbie, called Weird Barbie.
Ultimately, scheduling issues prevented the 29-year-old from working with the American director a third time, when she starred in 2017’s Lady Bird and Gerwig’s 2019 film adaptation of Little Women.

In an interview with Variety, the Dublin resident said: “I was definitely going to be Weird Barbie.”
“I don’t know how to take this, you know? I mean, I would be with Kate McKinnon, so that would be great.
“But yes, I worked with Jacqueline Durran, the costume designer. After they made (the costume), I thought, who am I even going to be?
“Because I had a scene, but I never got to do it, and I wasn’t in the movie… and she said, ‘Oh, obviously you’re going to be a very weird Barbie, Saoirse.’
Speaking about what her Barbie would be like, Ronan said: “I think I would be a very strange girl who talked to herself and always had her dog with her and she just talked to the dog and didn’t want to look at who “somehow.”
