The Palestinian Red Crescent said this Sunday (05/26/2024) that a “large number” of people were killed or injured in Israeli bombing of an area designated as humanitarian, near the city of Rafah, at the southern end of the Strip, according to Spiral. Other sources indicate that at least 28 people were killed, the number of injured is uncertain.

“Ambulances are carrying a large number of martyrs and injured people after the (Israeli) occupation attacked displaced persons’ tents near the UN headquarters, northwest of Rafah,” Social X said online (Twitter). “The location was designated as a humanitarian zone by the Israeli occupation,” it added.

The Health Ministry of the Hamas government in Gaza and the Emergency Committee of the Rafah Governorate reported a bombing at a center for displaced people near Rafah and said dozens of deaths and injuries were recorded. The press office of the Hamas government, a group considered a terrorist group by the European Union, indicated that the death toll was at least 30.

“A massacre”

Doctors quoted by German agency dpa said at least 28 people were killed, while photographs taken in the area of the attack in the Tel al-Sultan neighborhood showed several improvised shelters on fire. It was not known how many people were trapped under the rubble. Sami Abu Zuhri, a senior Hamas official, called what happened a “genocide” and blamed the United States for providing Israel with weapons and funding.

Israel, for its part, indicated through a military spokesman that the target of the attack was a camp where “a large number of Hamas terrorists were active” and that it was therefore launched “against legitimate targets in accordance with international law, using precision weapons based on accurate intelligence.”
